Great Basin Brewing, Reno NV

TL;DR – The food and beer were good, but the service was sub-par.

The short version on the service is that I was seated at a table where I sat and sat and finally got up and went back to the hostess station (only a few feet away) and said that I hadn’t seen a server yet. Apparently the guy who was supposed to serve me didn’t realize that was his table. He was very apologetic and very attentive … for about 15 minutes … then I had to keep flagging him down again as he seemed very preoccupied, and not with taking care of customers.

But the place was sort of interesting, certainly big enough in a “trying to be creative” sort of way, with backlit oversized beer posters on the ceiling and a sizable but separate bar area:

I ordered a flight of beer that, left-to-right, corresponded to the numbered items on the beer list:

On the whole, the beer was pretty good although not among the best I’ve had. The Whoop Ass Wit was a bit on the thin side for my taste, but pleasant. I thought the Wild Horse was oddly edgy for that style, but maybe it just wasn’t what I had the taste for today. I really liked the Leave No Trace and had a follow-up pint of that one. I expected to enjoy the Distant Lands, but actually preferred the ICKY over it, to my surprise – the ICKY was much better balanced and very nearly beat out the Leave No Trace for the pint. And finally, the Outlaw Milk Stout was very nice, but would have been ever so much more enjoyable in the dead of winter than on a 95º day after hours of driving through desolate countryside and full sun.

I’d decided on the drive that I would get pizza if they had something I thought looked good, and so they did. This was Italian Sausage, mushrooms, and red onion:

The crust was just perfect and I was able to finish the whole thing (having not eaten in almost 8 hours). It would have been nice to have a touch more sauce, but that’s just picking nits 🙂

On the whole, I’m glad I stopped here in spite of the questionable service.
