Frontier Brewing Taproom, Casper WY

2 July 2023

Frontier Brewing has taken over an old theater, I think – the taproom is in what would have been the lobby. They don’t have a kitchen but they do have a “pour-your-own” tap wall with ten taps, four of their beers and six guests.

I like that because I get to choose exactly what I want and have as much or as little of each as I feel like; you’re charged by the ounce for what you pour. Since there isn’t a typical flight option, I’ll show each of my pours (most of which are in 6oz glasses) and describe them.

Frontier Firefly (Apricot Wheat Ale, 4.5%) – I’m not always a fan of fruity beers but this one is really good – it’s not too sweet and has just the right level of apricot flavor to complement the wheat beer.

Frontier Happy Jack Vol. 5 (Pale Ale, 5.2%) – What a wonderful example of a Pale Ale this is! It was very enjoyable, light and tasty.

Ska Brewing Rue B Soho (Grapefruit Lager, 5%) – Some grapefruit beers are really great on a hot day. Some try really hard to be that. I’m afraid that, for me, this one falls into the latter group.

WYOld West WYPA (IPA, 6.5%) – WYOld West is a brewery in Powell WY, hence the mashup of “WY” and “Old West.” I didn’t dislike this one, but it wasn’t as good as Frontier’s own beers.

WYOld West Flying Diamond (Peanut Butter Stout, 6.1%) – I loved the first three ounces of this one but by the time I was at the end of the glass, I was very happy it wasn’t a full pint. It was so true to its style and very well executed, but so over-the-top that I can’t imagine drinking more than a half pint of it. Still, I’d definitely do this again if given the opportunity, just in small quantities.

And finally, I poured a full pint of the Happy Jack because it was just that good.

I’m glad I paid a visit to Frontier Brewing. I’d originally been debating between coming here or revisiting Gruner Brothers where I was last year; Gruner Bros is closed on Sundays so that decided the issue! If I’m back again, however, I’ll be back at Gruner Bros.
