Remedy Brewing Company, Sioux Falls SD

And what are they the Remedy for? “What ales you.”

It was very convenient that Remedy was just a short walk from my hotel! In fact, while walking there I saw Monk’s Ale House where I’d visited the previous time I was in Sioux Falls.

Remedy has 16 taps, all with their own beers, and I did two flights. I’ll describe each left-to-right.

Pils Nye the Science Rye (Pilsner, 5.1%) – I’m not always a fan of Rye as a beer ingredient, but it really worked well in this pilsner and I’m not just saying that because I love puns. This may have been my favorite of the eight beers I tasted.

Big Sioux Brew 23’ (Pilsner, 4.9%) – It’s beyond me why the name has “23’” rather than “‘23” but that’s just my annoyance at bad copy-editing. The taste was good, a nice clean pilsner, but the first one had just a bit more interest for me.

Sacking of York (English Pale Ale, 5%) – I expected more of this one, much more. It was good, but in more of a “it had no negatives” way than the way I usually think of pale ales.

Liam the Headstrong (Irish Red Ale, 4.6%) – OK, this was pretty good. I don’t often like red ales but part of the reason I enjoyed this one was because it didn’t have an overpowering flavor. Take that as good or bad, as you will.

Queen Bee (Cream Ale, 7.3%) – Ah, my least favorite of the eight! I can’t even quite say why at this point; it just had a flavor to it that I wasn’t expecting and didn’t enjoy.

Vienna Lager (Vienna Lager, 5.9%) – Tasty! Although it wasn’t as good as others I’ve had of this style, I did enjoy it.

Porter (American Porter on Nitro, 6.5%) – This one was also good, but it struck me as more of a generic porter style liquid than a porter with its own character. There just wasn’t enough flavor to it, but that didn’t make drinking it unpleasant by any means – it would be good as a session beer in cooler weather.

HopCopter DIPA (Imperial IPA, 8.3%) – Made with Strata and Michigan Copter hops, this DIPA was well-balanced but even so was low in hop flavors.

I thought it was unusual that there were two imperial IPAs on draft but no regular IPAs, just the one Pale Ale that wasn’t at all hoppy.

The food menu wasn’t large, but it was interesting. I opted for this which is sort of cross between a Sloppy Joe and a French Dip; the meat/veggie mixture was surprisingly similar to something my mom used to make, which makes me think this might be a regional thing. The side is chips and hummus, and there is a VERY SALTY au jus for dipping. The problem was that the roll fell apart as soon as I picked it up – the bread was very good and very fresh – so I ended up using chips to scoop up most of the meat off the tray!

All in all, Remedy is a pretty decent place as long as you want decent beer and don’t care much about the food. I did enjoy the end wall in this photo with glass panes looking into the brewing area and a large sign overhead saying, “Do not feed the brewers!”
