Hofbrauhaus, Columbus OH

5 November 2023

It’s not my first visit here, either! The food is nowhere nearly as good as Schmidt’s, but the beer is solid (if a limited selection) and the food is OK. They basically have just four beers available, the Lager, Weizen, Dunkel, and a seasonal (which on this visit was a red ale). They also can add various flavorings to the Weizen and they mix the Lager and the Dunkel to produce a Black and Gold which is what this is:

I enjoy both their Lager and Dunkel so this is an interesting way to get them both. I was also seated at the bar, where I usually sit on visits here, so I had a good view of this:

For the meal, I ordered their Wurstplatte which comes with three different sausages plus mashed potatoes and sauerkraut. It’s all good, but seems to me to be “watered-down” flavors for the American palette. Still, it’s not McDonalds!

The first beer was gone by the time the food arrived, so a liter of the Lager was procured and greatly enjoyed:

The Hofbrauhaus does a really amazing Black Forest Cherry Cake but I decided instead to get a cream puff to go and eat that later at my hotel. I don’t have a photo of it, but now I know not to get that dessert at this place because it’s a very, very poor imitation of the cream puffs made by Schmidt’s. Still, the beer was excellent and the food was good, so this made a good correction for the disappointment of GCBC.
