Derive Brewing, Columbus OH

6 April 2024

I’ve also been to Derive before, so didn’t take new photos of the place. Here’s the flight I had on this visit, and these are described right-to-left:

Temporarily Human – West Coast IPA, 6.8% – This is a double-dry-hopped West Coast IPA with Mosaic, Simcoe, Strata GTX, and Riwaka (NZ) hops, clean and crisp. It was my favorite of the four and warranted a 4-pack to-go.

Saison D’More – Saison, 7% – This one was brewed in collaboration with More Brewing from the Chicago area. It’s whirlpoolled with a touch of lavender and lemon peel as well as NZ Motueka hops. I loved the Saison flavor, but it was just a bit too unusual to be in the running for a 4-pack.

OG Pale – American Pale Ale, 5.5% – They call this one “a nostalgic look at 2016 in a glass” and don’t ask me what that means! It’s hopped with Mosaic and Nelson in the kettle and dry hopped with Mosaic and Nelson Sauvin. I liked it, but not as much as I expect to like a Pale Ale — there was an unusual flavor from the hops that surprisingly put me off this one.

Fast Friends – Hazy IPA, 6.5% – Derive use their “favorite hops from across the globe” in this beer that is hopped and double dry hopped with Citra, Citra Cryo, Simcoe, and NZ Motueka. It was very difficult to decide whether I preferred this or the Temporarily Human; I’m sure I would have been equally happy with a 4-pack of either, but the TH won in the end (by a whisker).
