Inside the Five Brewing, Perrysville OH

This location in Perrysburg seems to have a farmers market attached to it although I did not explore that. There’s an outdoor space as well as a lot of indoor area; here’s what was visible from inside the door but there’s a lot more past the bar and to the left as well.:

They had 20 taps running so I did two flights of four; here’s the first flight from left to right:

T-Town Lager – American Lager, 4.4% – This would be a good all-day lager on a hot summer’s day, refreshing with a mildly dry finish. I liked it but didn’t love it, although I’d have it again.

Training Wheels – Pineapple Radler, 3.0% – When you can almost feel the sugar grinding between your teeth you know you’re drinking an overly-sweet beer. There was a hint of pineapple but not nearly as much as I expected given the style name, and it was completely over-the-top sweet for me.

Sunshine Sky – Lemon Orange Wheat, 5.7% – I feel like this was trying very hard to be a Shandy but failing to get there. There was some citrus flavor, but mostly I just felt it was overly tart and dry.

Andy’s Mint – Chocolate Covered Mint Stout, 7.7% – I could never drink a pint of this and yet for me it was the best of the two flights. That definitely says more for this beer than for the other seven which should all have been better than they were.

My food was this amazing Turkey Club with super fresh ingredients, perfectly matched, on toasted rustic sourdough. Fantastic! The chips were just as you would expect, very good but not reaching the levels of the sandwich itself.

And now for flight number two from left to right:

The Devil Wears Hoodies – New England IPA, 6.6% – OK, a New England IPA that isn’t heavy on citrus and isn’t hazy? Interesting, but not bad. It was pretty drinkable but without more citrus doesn’t have much to distinguish it from NEIPAs in New England. Still, it was the best of the four IPAs I tried here.

Cherry Hop Shield – Sweet Cherry West Coast IPA, 7.1% – I confess that when I ordered this I expected an IPA version of the Sam Adam’s Cherry Wheat that is big on cherry. Alas, there was cherry flavor present but not as much as I’d expected, and it was far more hoppy than I’d thought it would be. The cherry and the hops did balance each other out, so that was nice.

A Beautiful Death – Double IPA, 9.0% – Again, the citrus was very mild in this, leaving just the strong alcohol to overshadow it. So far, I’m 0 for 2 on DIPAs for this trip and still looking for a great one.

The Chosin Few – Fruit Cocktail IPA, 7.0% – No, I have no idea what the name means. Yes, I should have picked something else instead. No, this doesn’t really taste like canned fruit cocktail although there is a hint of it.

Overall, if I come back it will be for the food and I’ll much more selective in my beer choices.
